Synopsis This book is designed to present a complete story of the Rise and fall of Buddhism in India, its Re-discovery, Revival and Development in modern India. The study begins with a short survey of the Rise and Fall of Buddhism in India, followed by a comprehensive survey of Rediscovery of Buddhist Sites and shrines in India. The next five chapters (3-7) probe the contribution to the Buddhist Revival Movement in India by Anagarika Dharmapala of Sri Lanka, Ven. Kripasaran of Chittagong, Ven. U. Chandramani of Burma, Ven. Fujii Guruji of Japan and seven Pioneer Indian Bhikkhus. The eighth chapter highlights the contribution of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar who made Buddhism a living religion in India by bringing millions of his followers to the fold of Buddhism in 1956. The chapters 9-11 indicate the present position of the Bhikkhu Sangha, Vipassana Meditation and Buddhist Studies in India. In the 12th chapter are listed Buddhist Publications published in India in English and Hindi during the last 100 years from 1908 to 2008. The story of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans, Who were forced to flee to India following the brutal invasion of Tibet by the Chinese Army in March 1959, is told in the 13th chapter. And the 14th chapter sums up the present status of Buddhism and Buddhists in India.

About the author

D C Ahir

D.C. Ahir (born 1928, Punjab) is a reputed scholar of Buddhist studies, and has made notable contribution to the history of Buddhism during the last 42 years. He retired as Director to the Government of India in February 1986, and since then is fully engaged in enriching literature. He already has more than forty published works to his credit, besides numerous articles on Buddhism. In appreciation of his noble and notable contribution to the Buddhist Literature as a Distinguished Scholarand Author, the Maha Bodhi Society of India, Sarnath conferred on him on 30 November 2001 the Honorary Title of Buddha Sahitya Shiromani.
