Environment and Mining : A Peep into Deep

R.M. Lodha (Author) Hawa Singh (Author) Jagdish K. Purohit (Author)
Synopsis The book is an interdisciplinary study of mining and environment relationship. It analyses that mining leads to ruthless destruction of both natural and biological elements of the ecosystem, right from cleaning the vegetation to blasting of rocks. It discusses the pre- and post-mining impact through a unique approach, supported by satellite imageries, topographical maps, lab tested and other ground truth data. It is also an indepth analysis of non-ferrous minerals. Among them, quite few occupy national and state level status in production, also cover considerable area under mining activity. For sustainable development, the book suggests an applied Environment Management Plan (EMP) for different mining areas. It develops a social welfare theory of dumb-bells with the analogy that sustainability of the region can be achieved only when mining area is linked with the local community in a proper way; creating number of dumb-bells shaped planning areas. The study has been rated as "Major Achievement" by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, New Delhi. The book is highly instructive not only for the various departments of mining and environment, both at national and state levels, planners and policy makers but also for mine owners and local community even.
