India and China: Emerging Superpowers

Preeti Phuskele (Editor)
Synopsis A superpower is a global force, a force that can influence countries around the globe. America is the superpower as of today, as it spearheads every nation in all events. China and India, the two Asian giants, are developing and looking at their immense growth, one of them is destined to become the next superpower. America too has realized the potential displayed by these emerging giants. Both China and India have to adopt a few steps to become a "superpower". China has to change its political system, develop free market economy and limit its population growth. China and India, by contrast, possess the weight and dynamism to transform the 21st-century global economy. America's rise falls short in comparison to the simultaneous, sustained takeoffs of the two nations that together account for one-third of the planets population. For the past two decades, China has been growing at an astounding 9.5% a year, and India by 6%. What makes the two giants especially powerful is that they complement each others strengths. An accelerating trend is that technical and managerial skills in both China and India are becoming more important than cheap assembly labor. China will stay dominant in mass manufacturing, and is one of the few nations building multibillion-dollar electronics and heavy industrial plants. India is a rising power in the field of software, design, services and precision industry. So, the question today is: “Who will be the next superpower?” This book tries to answer the question based on facts and figures by prominent economists.
