Synopsis The present Flora is based on critical evaluation of the plant materials and data collected during the present study and the old collections deposited in MH and other concerned herbaria. All the collected specimens have been duly processed and two each of all the collection numbers have been deposited in MH after proper identification and labeling. Keys provided in this Flora are of the bracketed type and are relevant only to the taxa collected and studied from the area. Invariably names of authors of plant names and titles of books and journals are abbreviated following Authors of Plant Names (Brummitt & Powell, 1992), Taxonomic Literature ed. 2 (Stafleu & Cowan, 1976-1988) and its supplements (Stafleu & Menega, 1992-2000) and Botanico-Periodicum-Huntianum (Lawrence & al., 1968) and its supplement (Bridson & Smith, 1991). Distribution data of the species included are in the order, World, India and Tamil Nadu. District wise distribution data for the state is given preceded by TN, the abbreviation of Tamil Nadu. Notes are added for species wherever interesting findings have been made or clarifications felt necessary.

The present study reveals that the grass flora of Tamil Nadu comprises about 447 species and 19 infraspecific taxa ranging in 136 genera.
