Synopsis "This book attempts to elucidate how gender discrimination and violence, impact our lives. The elimination of gender based discriminations is one of the fundamentals of the constitutional edifice of India. But violence against women is an obstacle to the achievement of the objective of equality, and violates and impairs the enjoyment by women of their fundamental rights. Violence against women is not always easily assessed, because perpetrators attempt to justify some practices based on religious or cultural customs.

This book serves to raise awareness and provoke action in addressing the causes of gender-based violence. Not only has the legislature played a proactive role in enacting beneficial legislation but the courts have also taken an uncompromising view in several areas -- domestic violence, prenatal and pre-conception sex selection, sexual crimes etc. Cases selected are those that promote opinion-change and positive collective action. The aim of this book is empowerment by spreading knowledge and increasing awareness on violence against women, backed but authoritative case law.

The book has been formulated like a dictionary, wherein catch words have been identified under each of the listed sub-heads and catalogued in alphabetical order, that should facilitate easy access to relevant case precedents."
