Women and Social Change

Shirin Mehta (Author)
Synopsis The book mainly covers the history of women of Gujarat from nineteenth century to Gandhian phase. But, the regional specification is treated as sub-set or sub-system of total Indian culture.

The book reflects the wide range of controversies, debates and concerns over women issues glaringly surfaced as a corollary of women's historicity during colonial regime. It also encompasses the various dynamics of gender construct, the women's identity formation and complex simultaneity of their marginalization.

Yet the obscure women from cities and distinct country towns much before the coming of Gandhi played projecting role as agents of social change. They redefined themselves. The women of diverse class, castes and communities converged for common cause of their uplift and social reforms and constituted 'collective identity' by making 'transversal shift' while maintaining their ethnic rootedness.

This study deals with multifarious dimensions of live experiences of women's past. It provides a fresh approach to a number of central problems in the history of women in Gujarat.
