Synopsis Environment has changed significantly during past two centuries. There is marked increase in concentration of green house gases like carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere and various pollutants are threat to plant and human life. To highlight the "Eco-degradation due to Air Pollution", a national seminar was organized by Indian Association for Air Pollution Control on 16th October 2004 at Vadodara. The present book includes the chapters on green belt, eco-technology, eco-auditing, town planning, air pollution control, use of nanotechnology in pollution control, causes of pollution on health of kids. Pollution due to stone crushing units, biopollutants like fungi and bacteria in markets, affecting museum materials and monuments, biomonitoring, bioremediation and effect of pollution on breeding of birds were also discussed and compiled in this volume. The book not only provides first hand information on degradation of environment both materials and human health but solutions suggested can be effectively used by planners and industrial house alike to reduce the damage caused by air pollutants. When we are working for Blue Planet Earth and preparing master plan for sustainable cities more such studies will highly useful.

About the authors

Arun Arya

Dr. Arun Arya got his basic training in Mycology and Plant Pathology from University of Allahabad under the guidance of Prof. Bihari Lal. He started his career as Lecturer in Microbiology in Gurukul Kangri University, Hardwar in 1985. Working at present as Reader in Botany, M.S. University of Baroda, Vadodara has a vast experience of teaching at graduate and post graduate levels. He has published 71 research papers dealing with Fungal taxonomy, physiology, pathology and biodeterioration. He is a popular science writer, and has also published a book on Tropical Fruits: Diseases and Pests. Recipient of Young Scientist award from DST, New Delhi. Dr. Arya has presented his findings at XV International Botanical Congress at Yokohama, Japan. He is Fellow of Indian Botanical Society and Indian Phyto-pathological Society.

S.J. Bedi

S.J. Bedi, Ex. Professor and Head, Department of Botany, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, is a Senior Botanist with vast teaching and research experience of 31 years in the field of Plant Ecology and Systematic Botany. Published around 100 research papers in journals of national and international reputation. Presently, he is a consultant to various agencies for pollution control methodologies.

V.S. Patel

Vinod S. Patel, Consulting Engineer and Environmental expert has been working in this field since last 30 years. He has worked on various engineering projects in USA, East Africa and India in various capacities. He is the President of Indian Association for Air Pollution control. He was Visiting Professor-Faculty of Technology and Engineering, Science Faculty, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He has published more than 30 technical papers.
