Studies in Contemporary Literature
Synopsis
Marked by filiations and affiliations contemporary literature in English reflects a sort of nativised hegemonic sensibility with a view to reacting against the empire and its onslaughts. Besides British and American literature, commonwealth literature has emerged as an important component of contemporary literature in English. Divided into two sections, the volume deals with the commonwealth writers, like Nissim Ezekiel, A.K. Ramanujan, Jayant Mahapatra, Kamala Das, Bharati Mukherjee, Margaret Atwood and Arundhati Roy in the opening section. The second section titled British and American literature examines contemporary authors like Donald Davie, R.W. Emerson, Tennessee Williams, and Arthur Miller from different angles. The volume opens up fresh vistas of critical enquiry and interpretation in respect of contemporary literature in English.
