Synopsis This publication entitled "Handbook of Special Education" serves the purpose of a reference book on the subject. It provides an introductory overview of special education systems, curriculum and standards. In the process it focuses on developmental disability both in global and Indian contexts. Selected personal reflections and experiences have been included while dealing with the subject areas of special education, specially in India and United States. Institutional involvement in the whole process has been covered. Focus also lies on related issues and options available for United Kingdom while dealing with special educational needs and disability. In particular, the "SEN Code of Practice" and "Special Educational Needs/Duties in the Education Act, 1996", have been presented. Global reflections on special needs education strategies and possibilities related to cases with ADD/ADHD, autism, Asperger's Syndrome, dyslexia and other similar problems are dealt in detail. The role of technology, design and resources in making proper interventions and finding long-term solutions for special needs students and education is outlined. Inputs have been based on international experiences, such as those from USA, Canada etc. Focus also lies on adaptive technology developed for special disabilities, resources for special needs education and inclusive design elements and web accessibility required for handling such problems. To make this book more user-friendly, detailed glossary of terms, acronyms/abbreviations, bibliography, websites/links are provided herein.
