Lalon: Selected Lalon Songs Translated into English

Haroonuzzaman (Author)
Synopsis There is no beauty truer than the beauty of God in the universe that lives within our souls. Baul songs are of joy and love, and of their deep longing for mystical union with the divine within. Their language is simple, and the deepest of their thoughts are clothed in hone-spun words and metaphors, common to countryside village folk. Yet, amid the simple language, the songs of the Baul contain an extensive, meaningful philosophy that connects to all of their life and aspirations. Lalon was a humanist who completely rejected all distinctions of caste and creed, and he wrote songs of Guru or the spiritual guide, the central idea depicting that emancipation of the soul is not possible without guidance. The song ShobLooke Koi Lalon Ki Jaat Shongsharey indicates his strong belief in humanity. His songs were a unique example of ascetics, mysticism and divinity. He passed away on the 17 October, 1890, at Chheuriya in Kushtia, at the age of 116. Even after 117 years of his death, Lalon's powerful metaphysical lyrics are amazingly alive in the superfluity of our market-driven culture. Also, Lalon songs may provide us with a cushion to consumerism and drab commercialization that are sweeping across the modern times.
