A slew of cutting-edge technologies are shaping the future. One of the big impacts of technologies is about miniature-sized particles. These nano-particles are slated to change the world. A nano size is one billionth of a metre. At such a small size, properties of matter change considerably. This is partly due to increase in surface-area to volume ratio. Nanotechnology finds wide applications in areas as diverse as painting and coating, electronics, defense, agriculture, environment and energy. These nano-products would be immensely powerful and efficient. While technology is powerful, there are some concerns that the adverse effects of technology too will be powerful. The issues vary from regulations to environmental impact to health hazards. These concerns are reflected in the initiatives and roadmaps made by nations. Governments have tried to address these issues by embedding responsible nanotechnology guidelines in initiatives and regulations. Besides issues, there are significant challenges pertaining to application and commercialisation of nanotechnology. Most of the advanced applications of nanotechnology are still in the developmental stage. Despite the challenges and issues, nanotechnology is making rapid progress and soon will become an all-pervasive technology. Sameer A. Zodgekar

Sameer Zodgekar holds a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and an MBA in marketing management from University of Pune. He is currently working as a Consulting Editor at Icfai Business School Research Centre, Pune. Prior to joining Icfai, he served in the pharma industry for thirteen years. He worked with Glaxo Group, Alkem Group and Blue Cross Laboratories in various functional areas like manufacturing, sales and product management. He was also into international marketing for a brief period during his stint in Blue Cross, where he was responsible for managing brands in East Africa and Asia Pacific. His areas of interest are marketing, brand management, pharmacy and technology.
