Industrial Ecology: Concepts and Practices

Asis Kumar Pain (Author) Somnath Hazra (Author)
Synopsis Over the past decade, a new approach to environmental analysis has developed. Industrial ecology focuses on reducing the environmental impacts arising from the production process of goods and services, and on process innovations that can significantly improve environmental performance. It is through industrial ecology that the entire lifecycle of products and services, drawing on and extending a variety of related approaches, including systems analysis, material flow analysis, pollution prevention, design for environment, product stewardship, energy technology assessment and eco-industrial parks, can be effectuated. Since industrial ecology offers a great potential for environmental policy, it emphasizes the opportunities for new technologies and new processes, and the opportunities for economically beneficial efficiencies. The book has been structured into two sections with twelve articles: section I comprises six articles based on the concept of industrial ecology and technological dimensions of industrial ecology with an economic approach and Section II has six articles to explain some practices for the development of this new emerging field. The author proposes some effective policies and management improvements to increase the resource efficiency of such systems. The industrialization of society, the explosion of population and day-by-day change in social and economic factors are contributing towards the growing environmental problem. This book is valuable for postgraduate students and researchers on environmental management and industrial pollution, industrialists, officials of State and Central Pollution Control Boards across the country and the Ministry of Environment besides medical practitioners.
