Tiger and Other Poems
Synopsis
This new volume, Tiger and Other Poems evinces a marked departure. After the success of two long volumes -- Prayers to Lord Jagannatha (1994) and Krishna (2003) - Mohanty concentrates on the meditative and symbolic mode of writing. Tiger, that has occupied Mohanty's thought-process since the 1980s, assumes in the poems of this volume, a dimension that only the symbolic mode can comprehend and illustrate. Mohanty has left no stone unturned in unearthing and exploring the diverse facets of life. In doing so, despite a deep sadness embedded in the poems, Mohanty sings the theme-song of life, unpretentiously celebrating the rhythms of life. Neither through rejection nor through protestation, but through a willing acceptance of life as meaningful, Mohanty has matured as a poet, with a distinct poetic vision, a distinct poetic utterance, and an immaculate sense of belonging to his own country, culture and tradition.
