Synopsis This book records the evolution of the concept of informal sector and suggests a new definition of informal sector, particularly in urban areas recognising the heterogeneity in it. Explaining the concept and features of rural non-farm sector, the informal sector in rural areas, it critically evaluates the linkages of informal sector with formal sector and its relation with rural-urban migration. It also examines the growth and dynamics of informal sector on the basis of the survey of informal manufacturing sector at two points of time. The book comes to conclusion that it is not necessarily the poorest of the poor who migrate from rural areas. There is a need for bringing distinction of different categories of informal sector for having any policy to assist it. The book is useful for researchers, policy makers and development workers.
