Dalits and Environment: A Critical Analysis
Synopsis
The Indian constitution has special provisions for protecting individuals, environment, monuments, and respect for human rights. The Stockholm declaration on human environment; world commission on environment and development - (Brundtland Commission Report) our Common Future (1987) had a vital impact in bringing legislations to protect and improve the environment but the question arises whether these provisions and, declaration had any impact on Dalits and if it really protected the well-being of downtrodden, weaker sections and women or whether these sections have been marginalized in the name of development. This book is designed to ascertain the impact of environment or environmental law on Dalits since it is a gray area and not much of research has been done on the subject especially on Dalits and environment. Further to make an assessment on how far the Indian human rights, development and environmental law or environmental policies has ameliorated the abominable conditions of the Dalits, and the response of the judiciary in environmental issues. The book presents a lucid exposition of the attitudes adopted by the judiciary, bureaucracy, institutions, policy makers towards the development, and well-being and needs of the hapless majority. It is a significant contribution to understand the nature and direction of changes that are on the anvil in the current epoch of globalization.
