Internationalization of Higher Education: Perspectives and Country Experiences

Sridhar Krishna (Author)
Synopsis Globalization is a phenomenon which has its impact on a wide range of fields, higher education being one of them. A good definition of internationalization is that given by the Australian Vice Chancellors' Committee: "the complex process that gives the universities an international dimension". International education has principally taken three forms: One, students traveling abroad to study in a foreign location; two, universities establishing a joint venture known as a twinning programme, where the foreign university provides the learning content. In the twinning programme, while the initial part of the programme may be undertaken in the host country, the final part of the programme has to be undertaken in the home country. It also takes the form of franchising; three, branch campuses are set up in foreign locales. A number of US, UK and Australian universities have set up offshore campuses. University of Chicago has set up offshore campuses in Spain and Singapore, INSEAD in Singapore and Wharton has set up a private university in Singapore. There are four modes of supply in cross-border higher education under GATS: Mode 1 - cross-border transaction, mode 2 - consumption abroad, mode 3 -provision via foreign commercial presence and mode 4 - provision via movement of natural persons. The book contains articles on internationalization of higher education in various countries such as New Zealand, India, China, Japan, Australia, USA and countries in Africa. This book is expected to prove useful to educationists, research scholars, academicians, professors and students of management.
