Participatory Development: An Introduction
Synopsis
Participatory approach to development has emerged mainly because of recognition of the limitations of the conventional approach. The major limitation of conventional approach is that it does not necessarily hold all the stakeholders accountable. Participatory approach involves local people, development agencies, and policy makers, deciding together how progress should be measured, and results acted upon. It can reveal valuable lessons and improve accountability. This approach has gained exemplary acceptance in international development fraternity in recent years. The incorporation of "local knowledge" in development projects is now commonplace and this has been made possible only through the introduction of participatory development modules. The present book is focused on how participatory development is attracting interest from many quarters by offering new ways of assessing and learning from changes that are more inclusive, and more in tune with the views and aspirations of those directly affected. It provides an opportunity for development organizations to focus better on their ultimate goal of improving people's lives.
