Synopsis The present exercise attempts to scan the explosive decade (2002-2012) of the fast emerging market—India. Supported by an in-depth analysis, it measures the potential, identifies the components and delineates the road-map of the expanding market configuration. The study breaks new ground by attempting to quantify (and project it into the whole next decade) the market value(MMV) for the industry in India as distinct from MVA (manufacturing value added) or gross or net output. There is no other source from which the aggregate market value of industry could be accessed. And the exercise goes far beyond. To achieve its principal objective, it attempts a review of product markets, presents status appraisal, provides data on past demand and its dimensions, and extrapolates through the vibrant decade terminating in 2011-12. It identifies product variations by divergent denominations, market segments, lead players, foreign tie-ups, leading brands. In the process, it encompasses some 18 major industry segments, nearly 150 industry status reviews, over 300 product analyses, covering 1200 lead players and 2500 leading brands on a base of over 500 million consumers of all shapes, shades and sizes. The study spans practically the entire gamut of industrial activity. It brings under its wide wings capital goods and equipment, intermediates, components and accessories and consumer products—durable and non-durable. The exercise also presents macro-market indicators which would serve as valuable tools in the hands of corporate planners and market strategists and, of course, researchers, media planners, bankers and developmental institutions. The product data sheets capsuled into one or two page templates occupy seemingly small spaces. These, however, condense a wealth of information, which when supported by industry status profiles, represent in—depth analysis of the entire industry spectrum of India. Put succinctly, it addresses a tall order with a varied menu. The basic objective of the present study is to appraise the past and provide futuristic indicators for tomorrow which will serve as tools for making strategic decisions today. Every effort has been made to draw basic information from our own surveys and studies and other dependable sources, primary and secondary, published and unpublished, official and non-official. Checks and cross-checks have been applied. The massive information which has been accessed, analysed, evaluated and deployed could manifest some aberrations here and there. The economic forecasts are constrained by a complex fabric of conditions and policies. Admittedly, these are no astrological predictions. The forecasts, therefore, do need, for specific decisions, to be adjusted for subjective and newly emerging conditionalities, and, of course, highly variable policy changes.
