A Cyclopaedia of Drug Pathogenesy (In 4 Volumes)

Richard Hughes (Author) J.P. Dake (Author)
Synopsis The four volumes contain records of all proving done to date. Hughes believed that Allen's Encyclopedia had several faults, among them poor translations of the proving and admitting all published provings without checking their veracity. This latter issue was quite touchy since several years earlier a German physician, C.W. Fickel, had published (to enhance his reputation) several provings that were pure inventions. He had published under several pseudonyms as well and his work was often quoted by opponents of the homoeopathic system. This work was assembled by a committee including Drysdale, Dudgeon, and Pope in the UK, and Conrad Wesselhoeft, E. A. Farrington, and H.R. Arndt in the USA. As usual, with the work by Hughes, the scholarship is outstanding. If you have questions about symptoms in Allen's 10 volumes, a check of these four volume might solve doubts.

About the author

Richard Hughes

Dr. Richard Hughes was born in London, England. He received the title of M.R.C.S. (Eng.), in 1857 and L.R.C.P. (Edin.) in 1860. The title of M.D. was conferred upon him by the American College a few years later. Hughes was a great writer and a scholar. He actively cooperated with Dr. T.F. Allen to compile his 'Encyclopedia' and rendered immeasurable aid to Dr. Dudgeon in translating Hahnemann's 'Materia Medica Pura' into English. In 1889 he was appointed an Editor of the 'British Homoeopathic Journal' and continued in that capacity until his demise. In 1876, Dr. Hughes was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Organization of the International Congress of Homoeopathy Physicians in Philadelphia.
