Synopsis Pharmaceutical science is a most important branch of learning especially in the field of medical science.  It imparts knowledge regarding drugs and their processing and also the standardization.  According to Ayurvedic concept drugs occupy a most important place in the field of treatment, while mentioning the four pillars of treatment Acarya Caraka enumerates drugs in second place i.e. after physician.  Drugs are considered very vital for achieving success in the treatment.  Hence the detailed knowledge regarding their types, their place of origin, methods of collection, part’s to be used, proper identification, proper way of processing and proper standards and characteristics of raw and finished drugs, their dose schedule, mode of action method of uses is essential.  This it covers a very wide range of knowledge and probably because of this, in medical science it has been recognized as an independent branch of learning but in the field of Indian Medicine (Ayurveda) it is still included with medicine and its education is being imparted as a part of medical science.  So far there is no separate comprehensive text book is available for this branch of learning especially in English, which covers all the above mentioned aspects.  Thus with a view to prepare a text book/Reference book on this vital subject in Ayurvedic field present attempt is being done.  In this work all the necessary information and subject materials are collected from different sources/Text books analysed critically and presented in a systematic & workers and modern scientists working in the field.
