Synopsis The present analysis of Narayan's novels is with a view o understand the novelist's concept of womanhood. It is in this concept that Narayan's deep and profound relationship with society is anayzed. The First chapter 'Making of the Writer' traces the growth of the writer and his preoccupation with human predicament. The second chapter 'Repression of Women as the Other' covers the subordinate position of woman in society. The third chapter 'Concerns of Love and Marriage' deals with Young Narayan's view of love as a spontaneous inevitable experience of youth and juxtaposition of infatuation and reality. Chapter four 'Women and family' is a study of Narayan's concept of family sphere, family situations, the disintegration of joint family system and woman's place in it. Chapter five 'Voices of resistance' covers the image of woman, conventionally degraded to subsidiary positions and roles, and also how they discover in themselves an invincible, combatant spirit and individuality. Chapter six 'Emergence of New Women' with Narayan's concept of strong individuals and the modern culture of working women for whom career an national is prior to every thing. The final chapter 'Conclusion' discusses the issues raised in the book and concludes that Narayan has explored and highlighted the malfunction of the social system without prejudice.
