Synopsis The book is the outcome of the research project entitled "Economic Welfare Programmes for Persons with Disabilities" sponsored by the PREM Division, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi. This book consists of seven chapters. The main focus of the book is on the study of problems being faced by persons with disabilities. The book provides an overview of PWDs in Karnataka and analyses the various incentives, institutional facilities offered for empowering the PWDs in the state. This book analyses the implementation aspects of PWDs Act, 1995; and for the purpose of examining the extent of availment of ICIFs, fields studies are conducted in two districts of Karnataka viz., Kodagu and Raichur. The book also devoted a chapter on impact of ICIFs on the living conditions of PWDs in the state. After providing summary of the findings, various suggestions are furnished for improving the quality of the life of PWDs. The book also attempts to indicate possible changes in the policy and programmes which are called for the fuller utilization of the objectives originally envisaged.

M.G. Basava Raja

Dr. M.G. Basavaraja, Reader, Divisioin of Economic, Mysore University, Sir M. Visvesvaraya P.G. Centre, Mandya, Karnataka, obtained his M.A., Ph.d. degree and Dip-in-Gandhian Studies from the University of Mysore. His area of interest are Gandhian Economics, International Economics, Public Economics, and Industrial Economics. His research papers have appeared in various journals / newspapers. Besides guiding doctoral students, he has organized several youth camps and seminars. He has worked in research projects such as block level planning for full employment, a sociological survey of Rural Houseless, Concurrent Evaluation of the Functioning of the Local Governments in Karnataka sponsored by Government of Karnataka, Bangalore. He is currently directing a research project entitles “Economic welfare programmes for persons with disabilities in the state of Karnataka” sponsored by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi. Apart from associating himself with the academic activities of the University, Dr. Basavaraja is participating in the activities of Gandhi Peace Foundation. Bangalore. Institute of Gandhian Studies Mysore and other organizations involved in constructive programme.
