Synopsis This Festschrift, in the honour of Professor R.S. Gautam, brings together essays as diverse as state of economy, social sector, governance and political frontier. Despite variations, the common string that binds the various presentations is the understanding on developments taking place in the economy, polity and society in the country. The book traces the board trends emanating in grassroots governance, direction of economic changes and the political frontier of the country, especially social justice and marginalized sections of the society. it has three parts. The first part contains a biographical sketch, painstakingly reconstructed in a manner of a social anthropologist by one of the editors of the volume. This is followed by a brief introduction of MPISSR that traces the development of institution created by Professor Gautam. The second part is comprised of essays on issues like grassroots governance and emerging leadership in rural India, social capital and equity, health and education, performance of economy and development, political frontier, social justice and corruption. The last part is an encomium to Professor Gautam from friends, colleagues and students.  Written by anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists, economists and experts on health, education and demography, this volume will be of interest to all social scientists, irrespective of their discipline.

About the authors

Yogesh Atal

Yogesh Atal (b.9 Oct. 1937) has had a long and distinguished career, first and UNESCO's regional Adviser for Social and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific, and then as its Principal Director in charge of co-ordination of work related to the World Summit for Social development help in Copenhagen in 1995. He also collaborated with the International Social Science Council in developing its Programme of Comparative research on Poverty (CROP). He is author and editor of numerous books and articles, including, The Changing Frontiers of caste, Local Communities and national Politics, Social Sciences –the Indian Scene, Building a nation, Indian Sociology from where to where, understanding the Social Sphere: The Village and beyond (co-editor), Mandate for Political Transition and the Poverty Question: Search for Solutions.

D.C. Sah

D.C. Sah is Professor at Madhya Pradesh Institute of Social Science Research, Ujjain. His research interests have focused on economic and sociological aspects of equity in sustainable common resource management, decentralized governance, and second-generation impoverishment risks in development displacement. He has authored three books and contributed several articles to academic journals.
