Synopsis Medicinal plants are nature's hidden and to a large extent unexplored treasure. Although they have been used as a source of safe and effective medicine since time immemorial, this potential resource has hardly been commercially tapped. India is endowed with about 8000 species of medicinal plants. According to a recent estimate to the Planning Commission, Government of India, the potential for plant-based crude drugs is about Rs. 4000 billion. Globally, the demand for medicinal plants and their derivatives is growing at a rate of 7-15%. Thus, considering the current market size and future growth prospects, there is a huge requirement for cultivation of medicinal plants in India. Medicinal plant biodiversity, conservation And Commercial Exploitation Offers Promising Avenues of self-employment and business opportunities particularly in the rural areas, preventing mass exodus of manpower to cities. Advances in Medicinal Plants is the outcome of a national seminar held to address challenging opportunities in the field. The papers presented were on a wide range of topics, including strategies for conserving medicinal plant biodiversity, GIS mapping of medicinal plant diversity and cultivation of important medicinal crops.

About the authors

Bir Bahadur

Prof. Bir Bahadur, M.Sc., Ph.D. has over 38 years of teaching experience served Osmania and Kakatiya Universities. He was Head Botany Department and Dean Faculty of Science. He has guided 29 Ph.Ds and published over 200 papers. He was awarded Best Teacher award by AP State Govt. and Professor V. Puri Gold Medal by Indian Botanical society. He was recipient of Royal Society Commonwealth Bursary, and worked at Birmingham University, U.K. and Institute of Genetics Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest. He is Fellow of several scientific bodies in India and abroad. He has taught Genetics & Biotechnology and Pollen biology and has edited 3 books.

B. Bhadraiah

B. Bhadraiah, M.Sc. Ph.D. is working s a Professor in Botany Department, Osmania University, Hyderabad. He has 26 years of teaching and research experience. He is the author of five books and has published more than 28 research papers in National journals.

K. Janardhan Reddy

K. Janardhan Reddy is a professor of plant physiology at the department of botany, Osmania University, Hyderabad. He has published 50 research papers in reputed journals. He has also edited or authored five books. His fields of research include plant nutritional physiology and biotechnology of medicinal plant.

M.L.N. Rao

M L N Rao is a subject expert (biotechnology) for the Andhra Pradesh Netherlands Biotechnology Programme, Institute of Public Enterprise, Osmania University Campus, Hyderabad. He has 23 years of experience in research, teaching and research management. He has published several research papers.
