Though many of them are harmless, some like the eye flies of the orient and eye-gnats of the New World are vectors of certain eye diseases. The fritflies and wheat stem-maggots destroy agricultural crops. More than 2100 species under 155 genera are so far known from the world of which 150 species and 55 genera are known from India. In this part, out of the four subfamilies of Chloropidae, two, Siphonellopsinae and Rhodesiellinae have been dealt with. Half of the species described in this volume represent new taxa.
