Harappan civilization is a product of a period of historical development in South Asia and is distinctive among the great river valley traditions of the third millennium Bronze Age. This book is based on literature of archaeology and its various interpretations in research journals and books. While discussing its geographical setting, urban forms, subsistence pattern, state, society, religion and religiosity, the author has attempted to address the genesis of Harappan urbanism tracing it from its early cultural development in this region to its mature civilization. At the end she has discussed the factors that contributed to the abandonment of urban sites. Civilization did come to an end but many of the Harappan sites seem to have survived in the form of village farming community.
