Occupational Safety, Health & Environment and Sustainable Economic Development: Proceedings of the Safety Convention -2006

Pradeep Chaturvedi (Editor)
Synopsis Safety Convention 2006 was an excellent opportunity to discuss critical and important issues relating to Occupational Safety, Health and Environment and Sustainable Economic development. Larger number of participants turned out for this event and interact on emerging issues and experiences of different agencies. The Convention emphasised on dealing with new issues of terrorism, infrastructure development and social development and related safety issues. These areas were identified as critical and solutions needed inputs from engineering faculties. None of the issues can find a permanent solution; but experts were encouraged to suggest contextual solutions. These needed to be studied on a long term and continuous basis. Extensive perspective studies and modelling for sceneries were considered necessary to create 'risk assessment' analysis and project 'risk management' strategies. A multi-disciplinary cross-sectoral approach was considered necessary, with the government agencies taking the lead. Thus, broader issues of safety were considered in the public domain and needed specific control of government agencies. The areas relatable to infrastructure and industry were considered as a part of sustainable economic development strategy. Role of public and private sectors were considered equally important. Whereas safety focus was considered equally important for all players, but the public sector was asked to take extra precaution as they are dealing with large public (or government) investments. The private sector operators are crucial in promoting safety environment as they have flexibility in operation and decision-making and can acquire and adopt safety measures more appropriately and in shortest possible time.
