Sugarcane Ratoon Management
Synopsis
Ratoon cropping is an age old system which has been in practice for many years. It may have begun when man first noticed regrowth of new shoots following cuttings of certain crops at harvest, thus producing a new crop without replanting. In sugarcane, ratooning is an integral component of commercial cultivation of this crop and accounts for about 50 per cent of the total area (4.0 million hectares) under sugarcane in India. In general, the productivity of ratoon crops is lower as compared to plant canes. However, it is evidently established through researchers that if ratoon crop is grown adopting proper ratoon management technology, the yields obtained are almost as much as those obtained with plant cane. In the present efforts scattered research results related to ratoon management have been collected, critically analysed and formed into a new text "Sugarcane Ratoon Management". It is for those who want to know about techniques of sugarcane ratoon management for increasing productivity. They may include farmers, extension and development personnel, scientists, educators, students and policy makers.
