Synopsis Librarians, information technologists, and information scientists are collaborating to transform inert archives into dynamic digital resources for learning, study, and enjoyment.  The Internet Archive's mission is to provide universal access to human knowledge, and given the advancement of digital storage and communications this goal is now achievable.  The public domain consists both of creative works, like books, whose copyright protection has expired and of other works that creators specifically dedicate to the public.  Once a work enters the public domain, the public is free to use the work any way they wish, including making copies.  The bookmobile may only provide access to public domain works.  The foremost advantages of a digital archive are cost efficiency and accessibility.  The emergence of the Internet and the wide availability of affordable computing equipment have created tremendous interest in digital libraries and electronic publishing.  Instant electronic access to digital information is the single most distinguishing attribute of the information age.  The effectiveness of a system for accessing information is the direct function or archives domain.
