About the authors

Kreg Lindberg

Kreg Lindberg is an independent consultant and researcher, and serves as an adjunct research associate with the Ecotourism Society (TES). His research interests include various aspects of ecotourism, as well as the economic and social impacts of tourism generally. He is published in various professional journals, including Annals of Tourism Research, and is on the editorial boards of Journal of Sustainable Tourism and Pacific Tourism Review. He has consulted and conducted research in Australia, the United States, Denmark, China, Indonesia, Sweden and Belize for organizations such as the Australian Commonwealth Department of Tourism, the U.S. National Park Service, New South Wales (Australia) National Parks and Wildlife Service, the world Wildlife Fund (WWF-US), the world Resources Institute, the FAO, and the World Bank. He received his Ph.D. in forest social science and a minor in economics from Oregon State University.

David Engeldrum

David Engledrum is a writer and editor for HVS Eco Services, an environmental consulting firm dedicated exclusively to the hospitality industry. He is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and frequently writes on Environmental issues. He has also covered a variety of topics as a newspaper reporter and as a sportswriter for United Press International. A former chef, he has had numerous recipes published in Long Island Chefs Magazine.

Megan Epler Wood

Megan Epler Wood is President of The Ecotourism Society (TES). Since 1990, she has worked with board member, advisors and members from around the world to shape an organization that defines ecotourism as a tool to conserve natural resources and provide sustainable development opportunities worldwide. She has acted as spokesperson and lecturer on these issues for TES and as an instructor of training workshops for countries including Trinidad, Fiji, Costa Rica, Kenya and Brazil. She teaches an annual international workshop on Ecotourism Planning and Management for The George Washington University and has led two international Ecolodge Forums in Costa Rica and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Epler Wood is a strong proponent of guidelines and evaluation programs for the ecotourism industry, and was the editor of the first international Ecotourism Guidelines for Nature Tour Operators and co-coordinator of the first Green Evaluations Program for nature tour operators in Ecuador. she has researched how community participation in ecotourism can be improved, and has published an analytical report on this issue for the Latin America Division of The Nature Conservancy. Epler Wood has authored, co-authored and edited newsletters, articles and books for The Ecotourism society since 1993, and was the founder of The Ecotourism society publication division. She holds an MS in Wildlife Biology, was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, and has been inducted into Who's Who for Executives for the Years 1999/2000. She is also a producer of films and videos on the natural world which have been broadcast by both The National Audubon Society and the National Geographic Society.
