Synopsis

The present study on Central Asia has been conducted with an environmental deterministic perspective, introduced in Geography by Ratzel and his followers.  The book has been divided into six chapters each one dealing with a specific sub-theme.  The introductory chapter highlights the significance, source material, methodology and frame of the study.  The second chapter deals with physical personality of the study area.  The third chapter discusses the socio-cultural milieu of Central Asia.  The fourth chapter focuses on the resource base and economic activities of the region.  The fifth chapter highlights the various areas of society and economy of Central Asia on which the impact of geographical conditions can be visualized.  The concluding chapter gives a summary of the main findings of the present study.

About the author

G.M. Shah

Dr. G.M. Shah is working as Reader at the Academy of Third World Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Dr. Shah did his M.A. Geography from the Department of Geography and Regional Development, Kashmir University in 1984. He was awarded M.Phil and Ph.D. in Geography by Kashmir University in 1988 and 1994 respectively. Before joining the Academy of Third World Studies, as a Lecturer in 1998. Dr. Shah was working as Research Associate in Regional Geography at the Geography Unit of Centre of Central Asian Studies, Kashmir University, Srinagar. Dr Shah has also remained associated with various research organisations of the country which include Council for Social Development, New Delhi; Operation Research Group, Baroda; and Centre of Study for Rural and Industrial Development, Chandigarh. Dr. G.M. Shah specializes in Regional Planning and Development. He has published many books and research papers on the subject. His forthcoming book on "Micro Level Planning for Integrated Area Development" is in the final stage of compilation. Dr. Shah has contributed many papers in national and international seminars and conferences on various aspects of development planning in Third World in Kashmir and Central Asia.
