Scientific Bengal: Science, Technology, Medicine and Environment Under the Raj

Chittrabrata Palit (Author)
Synopsis This book has grown out of papers presented to national and international seminars on social history of science in recent year. Social history of science is no longer a postmodernist, episodic theme. It has become a part of mainstream history as it addresses material progress of a nation. It is applied history. This book comprises essays in the history of science, technology, medicine and environment in colonial Bengal. Bengal was the first region to be conquered by the British in India and the bridgehead of all British projects in the rest of India. It was the sounding board of all British theories and practices of science. The Indian interactions also served as models for all four corners of India. The issues discussed in this volume can be easily generalised and applied in other case studies in India at both macro and micro levels.
