Synopsis

Buddhism and the Contemporary World: An Ambedkarian Perspective presents a selection of papers delivered at the First International Buddhist Conference held in Mumbai in April, 2005 along with an essay especially written for this volume. The papers concentrate both on challenges and issues of the contemporary world addressed by Buddhism, as well the capacity of Buddhism to squarely counter these challenges through an Ambedkarian perspective. About the authors

Aakash Singh Rathore

Aakash Singh Rathore is author of Ambedkar's Preamble: A Secret History of the Constitution of India (Penguin, 2020), and regular contributor to The Indian Express and Outlook magazine. Rathore has taught at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the Universities of Delhi, Rutgers, Pennsylvania, Toronto, Humboldt Berlin, LUISS-Rome, and Jindal Global University. His twenty previous books range from political philosophy, law, and religion to literature, sports, and wine. These include Hegel's India: A Reinterpretation, with Texts (Oxford University Press, 2017), and B.R. Ambedkar's The Buddha and His Dhamma: A Critical Edition (Oxford University Press, 2010). He is also author of the forthcoming book, B.R. Ambedkar: A Definitive Biography. 

Bhalchandra Mungekar

Dr. Bhalchandra Mungekar is a Member of the Planning Commission, Government of India; Chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla; and Founder-President of Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Social and Economic Change. Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai, Dr. Mungekar was also the President of the Organising Committee of the First International Buddhist Conference held in Mumbai in April, 2005, whence the present volume originated. Dr. Mungekar has been a recipient of several prestigious awards including Ambedkar Ratna and Outstanding Educationist awards. Author of several books, he is a distinguished authority on Dr. Ambedkarian Philosophy and Movement of Social Change.
