Socio-Economic Nationalism, 1800-1918
Synopsis
This volume is dedicated to great social reformer-Raja Rammohan Roy, who initiated a new social like in India, and Sh. Dada Bhai Naoroji, who roared in Metropolitan Parliament for economic and political justice for his countrymen. The book discusses from 1800 A.D. onwards the role played by economic and social factors in awakening national consciousness in a very comprehensive fashion. British Rule in India was based on economic exploitation of the indigenous people. Large scale and small scale industries in India were purposely destroyed by the imperialist rulers so that India be compelled to import from England. Similarly, on social front several distinguished personalities were active like Raja Rammohan Roy who succeeded in getting passed the law leading to abolition of Sati from Lord Bentink. Mahadev Govind Ranade was active on western coast in the same task in the second half of the same century. In short there was a clash of interests of the Indians and imperialists in the economic and social fields. The book is a beautiful collection of historical events, speeches and other economic and social facts. It gathers at one place all such factors which facilitated the achievement of independence like Swadeshi Boycott movement, transport and communication system and fundamental to all the trade and industry. The book will prove very useful for students of modern history, economic history in particular. Must for every library.
