Synopsis Giving a new translation and interpretation of the basic works of Vasubandhu the Yogacarin, the author shows that Yogacara metaphysics is basically the same as that of the early Buddhism. He contends that the Yogacara writings are open to interpretation in terms of realistic pluralism, and thus challenges their traditional interpretation in terms of idealistic monism. His translation is faithful to the original, arguments convincing and consistent, and presentation clear and readable. The texts translated and interpreted are (i) Madhyanta-vibhaga-karika-bhasya, (ii) Trisvabhava-nirdesa, (iii) Trimsatika and (iv) Vimsatika. The doctrine of experience presented by these texts may be summarized in the words of the author as follow: “The experience of samsara consists basically in one’s being forced to view oneself as the grasper (grahaka), the enjoyer (bhoktr), the knower (jnatr) of all beings, which are then viewed as the graspable (grahya), the enjoyable (bhojya), the knowable (jneya). There one cannot help mentally constructing the distinction between the subject and the object, the grasper and the graspable, the enjoyer and the enjoyable…”

Dr. S.T. Das, M.A., D.E.H.M. (India), F.R.G.S. (London), F.A.G.S. (New York), M.I.B.C. (Cambridge) is a distinguished social scientist and has so far authored 43 books to his credit. He was educated at the Banaras Hindu University of Ottawa, Canada. He is one of the pioneer writers on Defence Studies and Ethnology. he has travelled widely in India and abroad and has done much work of great importance to the specialist; he has as it were, personally added many bricks to the edifice of Defence sciences, ethnological sicences and geography. He has received international fellowships from U.S.A. and Great Britain and actively associated with I.B.C. Cambridge. He served the Department of geography, University of Ottawa and was invited by the Universitis of Montreal and McGill to deliver lectures. He was also invited in the Fifth I.B.C. International Congress on Arts and Communication at San Francisco to deliver lecture. For his distinguished academic services, the I.B.C. Cambridge has included his name in their several volumes to honour him as an international author. He is also a prolific popular science writer and has written 26 books for children on a variety of subjects and received several academic awards. He is the author of several well known books which include, Indian Military: Its history and development; Tactical Military Operation; Studies in defence strategy; Air Strategy and National Defence; Geostrategis, Life style: Indian Tribes; Tribal life in the North-East India and many others.
