Synopsis The present book investigates how far the social and development banking endeavours to benefit rural women who have long been relegated to background by tradition. Unfortunately gender disaggregated data on the use of bank credit are not available nationally. This volume on "Rural Women Empowerment and Development Banking" investigates the share of rural women in the credit offtake of selected rural branches of commercial banks and primary agricultural credit societies. The volume also presents a vivid and penetrating analysis of factors which promote or hinder womens access to credit, and participation of women borrowers in the management of credit at grass root level. The book provides necessary background for understanding the issues of gender justice in the area of credit, present policy perspectives and future credit strategy for rural women leading to their sustainable development. It is the fervent hope of the writer that the study will stimulate further research on the efficacy of various credit programmes in empowering rural women.
