Synopsis The present work is a twin study of Geomorphology and pre- historic Archaeology. The research on which it is based is supported by evidences from related disciplines relevant and feasible in the valley of Sutlej. In the first part, a comprehensive account of Quaternary geomorphological environment is presented. Data on morphometery, palaeo-currents and pebble fabric analysis, heavy mineral contents and the order of superposition of Post-Sivalik sediments has been sifted in an effort to understand post-Sivalik palaeoenvironment in the region. In the second part, this work deals with the prehistory of the area. A detailed and thorough presentation of a typological and analytical data with description of prehistoric sites and finds of the area has been presented. Finds of the other investigators have also been considered along- with the author's own discoveries. It highlights a critical view of various theories of the relation- ship of the Soanian Pebble tool culture to the Chelles-Acheulian cultures. Special emphasis has been laid on careful presentation of exact analysis of tool types, their combinations, and frequencies. The work complies with the criteria used in evaluating such a work, that is, it presents the research, which assumes a critical attitude, introduces known types from new area and contributes to an extension of knowledge.

Baldev Singh Karir

Dr. Baldev Singh Karir, the author of this book has been deeply involved with archaeology and anthropology for the past 12 years. Dr. Karir obtained his M. Sc. Degree in Physical Anthropology from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1972, took a short-term course in Museology at the National Museum, New Delhi, and training in prehistoric Archaeology at Deccan College, Poona in 1973. Dr. Karir obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1981 from the Panjab University. Dr. Karir has been actively engaged in Palaeoanthropological field work organised by the department of Anthropology, Panjab University, from time to time in various places and has widely traveled in India, particularly in North-west Himalaya. At present hs is engaged in teaching and research work at the Panjab University in the department of Anthropology.
