Synopsis The author of this treatise, Dr. (Mrs.) Jyotsna, has presented in it Early Indian Paintings in Sanskrit Literature a graphic picture of the development of the art of painting as depicted in Sanskrit literature. Although due to ravages of time and vandalism by man, the paintings of the ancient period in most cases could not survive, the Sanskrit literature serves as an important source of information about the art and also for providing the thoughts and feelings that urged the rulers and the elite to give importance to it. The technique followed by the artists in those days to draw up beautiful images is also contained there and would be a guide to them for the ages to come. The book gives an interesting study of the art that flourished in the ancient period.
