Human Development and Economic Development
Synopsis
Human Development and Economic Development is aimed at understanding the process of widening people’s choices and the level of well-being they achieve. It underscores the fact that income is only one choice and the economists had been pre-occupied with measuring economic development with the help of per capita income only. It is also a fact that the benefits of growth do not percolate uniformly to all strata of society. But human development is a much wider concept because it encompasses three essential choices for people – to lead a long and healthy life, to acquire knowledge and to have access to resources needed for a decent standard of living. This book is an edited volume out of selected and referred papers contributed to the technical session on the same topic of the Indian Economic Conference. This part of the IEA scheme of publishing such volumes from papers contributed for IEA Annual Conferences during 1994-2000. The present volume consists altogether 34 articles distributed over the following parts : (A) Human Development : Conceptual Issues, (B) Inter-State Comparisons and Measurement of Human Development, (C) Poverty Alleviation, Education and Human Development and (D) Human Development : Case Studies. These articles are authored respectively by : (A) N. Nettimi and N.H. Fidzani; Ashir Mehta; R.Y. Mahore; N.M.P. Verma; Jegadish P. Gandhi; R.S. Mishra; M.S. Subramanian; S. Narapa Reddy; A.
