About the author

Walter Hauser

Walter Hauser is Professor Emeritus of South Asian History at the University of Virgina. He lectured for many years at the BA level while also training advanced post-graduate students in the history of modern India. He has also served as Director of the Centre for South Asian Studies at Virginia. Professor Hauser’s research interest have been directed primarily to understanding the history of peasant activism in Gangetic North India, especially in twentieth century Bihar. In recent years he has been concerned more specifically with the career of Swami Sahajanand both as social reformer and peasant activist and the manner in which that reflected in the electoral arena of agrarian politics in the 1980s and 1990s. He is the editor of Sahajanand on Agricultural Labour and the Rural Poor (New Delhi; Manohar, 1994).
