Synopsis The present book is an outcome of sincere scholarly exercise done by the authors. The book attempts to explore aht ethnography and the problems of Artisan Tribes of Bihar (now Jharkhand) and West Bengal states. Artisan Tribes are engaged in the activities of craft making since time immemorial. They have been supplying the crafts prepared by them to agricultural Tribes of the region in which they live. They have also maintained the Jajmani relation with the Hindu castes of the region engaged in agriculture. But now-a-days, they are facing various kind of problems due to machine made articles available at cheap rate in the markets of their region. There is no separate scheme of the Government to make the Artisan Tribes developed. They are struggling hard to maintain their existence. Majority of them have become labour from craft-makers. Till now no systematic and detail study of the Artisan Tribes under study has been done. The book is unique contribution on the holistic study of the Artisan Tribes namely, Lohra, Karmali, Mohali and Chick Baraik. The book will definitely fill up the gap in knowledge on culture and the problems of the Artisan Tribes. About the authors

A.K. Haldar

Dr. Ashesh Kumar Haldar is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology, Ranchi University. For last thirty years he was associated with a number of research work of diversed nature. He was a close associate of Late Prof. L.P. Vidyarthi. His research interest is ethnography, research methodology, theoritical and developmental related topics. He has three books and number of research papers to his credit. He is also in the editorial board of a number of Indian Research Journals.

G. Pandey

Dr. Gaya Pande (b. 1954) is lecturer in the Department of Anthropology, Ranchi University, Ranchi. After getting a first class master’s degree in Anthropology from Ranchi University, he was awarded Doctoral Research fellowship of U.G.C. which enabled him to produce Ph.D thesis on Bonded Labour System of Palamau (1983). He has co-authored four books namely, History of Anthropological Thought (1993), Sun-worship in India (1992), Forest and Tribal (1998) and Manav Shastriya Vicharak Awam Vichar Dharayen (2001). He has his credit a dozen of research articles published in the journal of national repute and edited books. His research articles are related to maghi cultural traditions and problems of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
