Synopsis Dr. D. C. Sircar is a great name in the field of Indological Studies, and it will continue to remain for many years to come, even after his demise in January 1985. the present volume is to perpetuate the sacred memory of Dr. Sircar and pay a tribute to this great scholar of International reputation. The volume consists of a number of papers read at the VIII Annual Conference of the Indian History & Culture Society, held at Guwahati in December 1984. Besides, a generation of scholars, old and new, Indian and foreign, has contributed wholeheartedly to it. The research papers are written scholarly, varied and of absorbing nature, and deal with subjects such as ancient Indian history, prehistory, Protohistory, epigraphy, numismatics, art, architecture and sculpture – subjects which were very dear to Dr. Sircar. The galaxy of scholars and range of subjects they have dealt with, will make the volume a significant contribution to the studies in Indian archaeology and ancient Indian history. It is hoped that this volume will stimulate discussion, and help to open new vistas of knowledge.

About the authors

K.K. Das Gupta

K.K. Das Gupta is the Chairman of the Numismatic Society of India and the recipient of the prestigious Nelson Wright and Akbar Medals of the society. His present position is: Professor and former Head, Department of Ancient Indian History and Culture, Calcutta University. He has several works to his credit, including A Tribal History of Ancient India: A Numismatic Approach. He has also jointly edited with r.C. Majumdar Comprehensive History of India (Vol. III).

P.K. Bhattacharyya

Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, at present the Jadunath Sarkar Professor of History and Secretary of the Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Museum Incorporating Raja Rajaram Museum Collection of North Bengal University, is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland and royal Numismatic society of London. He was a student of Dr. D.C. Sircar. He was the chairperson of the Oriental section of the X International Numismatic congress, held in the University of London (1986). Beside a large number of papers, he has several works to his credit, including Aspect of Cultural History of Sikkim: Studies in Coinage.

R.D. Choudhury

Born in 1944 at Patacharkuchi in the District of Barpeta, Assam, Dr. Rabin Dev Choudhury, is one of the reputed museologists of India. He obtained M.A. degree in Ancient Indian History & Archaeology from Sagar University in 1965. He was awarded Ph.D by the Pune University. He was a Student of Prof. H.D. Sankalia, and Prof. K.d. Bajpai. At present he is the Director of Museums, Assam. He is the vice-President of All India Museum Association, Secretary (Historical Archaeology) Indian Archaeological Society and Vice-President of the Bihar Puratattva Evam Sanskriti Parishad, Bihar.
