Synopsis This book is the result of a highly determined attempt by scholars working on various aspects of Medieval Indian State. The papers included in this volume are based on a consideration of the processes involved in the formation, perpetuation legitimacy and politico-economic practices of Medieval Indian State. The principal objective in bringing about this volume points to the assumption that the concept of Medieval Indian State needed to be re-examined and re-defined. The earlier approach which simply assumed the nature of the Medieval government as the valid criterion for defining the nature of Medieval Indian State, totally ignores the complexity involved in situating Medieval Indian State in geographical, ideological legitimational, societal, economic and bureaucratic terms. The presentation of all these themes in such a systematic form brings out the complex issues that are vital to the understanding of Medieval Indian State.
