Hindu Revivalism and The Indian National Movement

Sobhag Mathur (Author)
Synopsis The present work is a documentary study of the ideals and policies of the Hindu Mahasabha, the premier political party claiming to represent Hindu interests during the stormy years of the Second World War, that is from 1939 to 1945. To achieve its aim of keeping the unity of Indian intact and also to maintain it as the land of the Hindus, the Mahasabha adopted Sarkar’s slogan ‘Hinduise politics and militarize Hindudom’. It advised the Hindus to join armed forces in large numbers so as to make the Hindu society militarized. Apart from these two major planks, the Sabha involved itself in numerous other issues of those years such as the looming possibility of the partition of the country. The resolutions passed in the annual sessions, the presidential and other addresses of its prominent leaders and also its activities as evidenced by its documents throw light on the significant role it played in the period. Unfortunately because it played in the period. Unfortunately because of the predominance of the Indian National Congress much of the role the Hindu Mahasabha played in the national movement is already on the way of being forgotten. The present attempt, it is hoped, will help in putting into proper perspective this important aspect of the Hindu revivalist trend during our struggle for independence.
