About the author

K.D. Bajpai

Born in 1917 in Jaipur (Dist. Rai Bareli, U.P.) Professor K.D. Bajpai has had an extremely illustrious career. He passed M.A. examination from the B.H.U., Varanasi, in 1942 with a First Class and got Diploma in Archaeology from Taxila School of Archaeology in 1945 under sir Mortimer Wheeler. He served as Custodian, State Museum, Lucknow, Archaeological Officer, U.P., and Curator (Director), Archaeological Museum, Mathura, before he became Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, University of Sagar, Sagar, in 1958. From 1963 he served this Department as Tagore Professor and Head till his retirement. He knows several languages (English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit), has been President or Chairman of numerous academic bodies, has authored about three dozen books and over 800 research papers, has edited several journals and bulletins, has directed the excavation of four major sites (Eran, Tripuri, Tumain and Malhar), and conducted explorations in major parts of Madhya Pradesh and has been honoured with numerous prizes and awards. He is Hon. Fellow of the Numismatic Society of India and the Epigraphical Society of India. He is indeed one of the greatest living authorities on ancient Indian art history.
