Sonba: A Tale of Dalit Suffering and Sacrifice
Synopsis
In 1939, Babasaheb Ambedkar happened to pass through Konkan region (Maharashtra). He was denied water at public places. With tears trickling down his cheeks, he proceeded on his onward journey in the scorching heat of June sun. Sonba, a wood-cutter, who was busy with his job of wood-cutting, saw what had happened. Throwing aside his axe, he rushed to bring water for his messiab. And water he did bring but it was too late. Babasaheb was gone. Next seven years he spent at the spot everyday bringing with him a pitcher filled with fresh water. After the long wait of seven years, unknown to his messiah, he laid himself unto eternal rest there only. He could not fulfill his desire to quench his thirst.
