Synopsis The unique feature of this book is the inclusion of chapters explaining the recent trends in vegetable seed production apart from the techniques of quality seed production in vegetables. Part II of this volume provides an understanding of all the aspects of quality seed production in vegetables like solanaceous vegetables, potato, bhendi, peas and beans, cucurbitaceous vegetables, cole vegetables, root vegetables, tuber vegetables, bulb vegetables, leafy vegetables, salad vegetables and perennial vegetables. The important aspects covered under the afore mentioned vegetable crops includes but not limited to crop origin, uses, nutritive value, area and production, botany propagation, various seed production techniques, certification requirements, seed standards, harvest and post harvest techniques, storage, plant protection, seed pathology, storage entomology and pre sowing treatments. Chapters with general topics related to vegetables are given in part III, which includes mushroom production, microarray, microbial dynamics in spermosphere, edible vaccines, hydroponics and establishment of commercial biofertilizers units. This volume would be useful as a textbook to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of Agriculture, majoring in Seed Science and Technology and Plant Breeding and Genetics as well as students of Horticulture. Also, it would serve as a reference book to the scientists involved in seed production and crop improvement programmes.

About the authors

K Vanangamudi

He is the Professor and Head of Department of Seed Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. His experience in teaching research and extension is over 21 years. He has guided 10 M.Sc. (Ag.) and 17 Ph.D. students. He is a recognized guide of Bharathlar University, Coimbatore. He has undergone one year training in Tree Seed Technology at Mississippi State University, USA. He has published 278 research schemes as Principal Investigator funded by various National agencies. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, he has been awarded with 'Best Post-graduate Teacher Award' in 1998. 'Best Scientist Award in Agro-Forestry' in 1999 and 'Madras Agricultural Students in Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Gandhi Gram Rural Instt., Deemed University. He is also consultant to Kerala Forestry Project. He has traveled to several countries in connection with Forestry research and education viz., USA, Japan and Canada.

Dr. N. Natarajan, Professor of Seed Science and Technology working as Deputy Director of Research in the Directorate of Research, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, coimbatore. He has 20 years of experience in the field of teaching, research and extension service. He has published 2 books, 35 research papers in International and National Journals and 20 popular articles both in Tamil and English. He has also presented papers in National and International Conferences and Seminars.

Dr. K. Natarajan, Assistant Professor of Seed Science and Technology, Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu, India. He has published 9 research papears, 9 popular articles in International and National Journals. He has also presented 43 research papers in National Seminars and Conferences. He has specialized in flower seed production areas.

M. Bhaskaran

Dr. M. Bhaskaran, Director, Govt, of India, National Seed Research and Training Centre, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India has 18 years of experience in UG and PG teaching, research and extension service. He has guided five M.Sc. students and one PhD students. He has obtained three research projects so far and published 23 research papers National journals and 5 in International journals. He also published two books.

Dr. A. Bharathi, Associate Professor of Seed Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He has 10 years of experience in research, teaching and extension. P. Natesan

Dr. P. Natesan, Assistant Professor of Seed Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He has 30 years of experience in research, teaching and extension. He has published 12 research papers in National and International Journals and 20 popular articles. He has also presented many research papers in National and International Seminars and Conferences. He has guided 5 M.Sc. students.

K. Malarkodi

Dr. K. Malarkodi, Teaching Assistant (Seed Science and Technology) Amil Nadu Agricultural University, Trichy. She has published 45 research papers in National and International Journals and 40 popular articles. She has also presented many research papers in National and International Seminars and Conferences.
