Synopsis The Environment and Development Book Series is brought out by Media for Sustainable Development (MSD), a core unit at the Centre for Environment Education, India. This landmark series, which is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), seeks to bring development alternatives for a variety of ecological situations to the notices of decision makers and policy planners. Media for Sustainable Development aims to development general awareness and provide policy support on key environment and development issues. MSD maintains a website forum www.envirodebate.net with the support of the Ford Foundation, to widen involvement and participation in major environment-development debates of the day. The Centre for Environment Education (CEE) was established in August 1984 as a Centre of Excellence supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, government of India. The primary mandate of the Centre is to improve public awareness and understanding of environmental issues with a view to promote the conservation and wise use of nature and natural resources. CEE received India's highest award, the 'Indira Gandhi Paryavaran puraskar' for the year 1997, in recognition of the quality and impact of its contribution in the field of environmental education.

About the authors

R. Gopichandran

R. Gopichandran serves as a Scientist at the Centre for Environment Education and coordinates the Industry Initiatives programme building capacities of industry, regulatory agencies, financial institutions and community stakeholders on aspects of compliance and environmental management. He has significant experience in devising information support and technical assistance strategies for phasing our ozone depleting substances in conjunction with commitments to Montreal Protocol; working closely with United Nations Environment Programme in particular. Two doctoral degrees in areas of microbial and chemical ecology and about thirty publications to his credit reflect his substantial academic foundations. Gopi has also taught extensively in several centers of higher learning in India.

Shyam R. Asolekar

Dr. Shyam R. Asolekar has rich academic and practical Experience in the field of environmental management. he teaches at the Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumabi and advises industries on management of effluents and hazardous wastes and eco-industrial development issues. The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India and the Central Pollution Control Board have consulted Dr. Asolekar on regulations and guidelines for management of municipal and hazardous wastes too. His areas of research and practice include Environmental Policy, Preventive Environmental Management, Hazardous and Radioactive Waste waters; and Application of Remotely Sensed Data for Monitoring of Environmental System.
