Glimpses of Indian Phycology: P. Sarma-Felicitation Volume

A.N. Kargupta (Editor) J.P. Keshri (Editor)
Synopsis The aim of this book is to highlight the current activities in algal research in the country. Emphasis has been given to taxonomy and biology of the algae as a whole. Charophytes and cyanophytes (cyanobacteria) have been given special attention. The former groups has drawn considerable attention of the plant biologists, since they are now established as progenitors of land plants. Cytotaxonomy, morphotaxonomy and phylogency of this group has also been given proper position in this treatise. On the other hand, cyanophytes are important because they are the primary colonizers of denuded land. Due to their twin ability of nitrogen fixation and photosynthesis they influence considerably the ecology of different niches. Their genetic make-up, taxonomy and ecology, germplasm conservation, their role in agriculture and other aspects have been covered in greater detail. Fossil algae are important from the evolutionary point of view. Three papers on fossil algae have enriched this volume. Some more important topics on taxonomy and biology of other algal groups have also been included in this volume. Thus the book covers all the aspects related to algae right from taxonomy, ecology, genetics, to palaeobotany. As such the book reflects the current status of phycological researches going on in the country.

Dr. Jai Prakash Keshri is a faculty member of the Postgraduate Department of Botany, The University of Burdwan and teaching Phycology both in general and special papers. He did his M.Sc. in Botany with specialization in “Phycology” from Burdwan University and Ph.D. on “Filamentous green algae of West Bengal” under the guidance of Prof. Pranjit Sarma, an eminent phycologist of India. His area of research interest is Freshwater algae: ecology and taxonomy, with special reference to green algae and blue green algae. Presently he is working on desmids and blue green algae with aim to establish a germplasm bank of these groups in Eastern India. He has contributed over twenty papers mostly in International journals. He is an important contributor of the forthcoming volumes of ‘Photomicrographs of Freshwater algae’ (editors T. Yamagishi 7 M. Akiyama), Uchida Rokokuho, Tokyo, Japan. He is a life member of several National academic societies like Phycological society, Botanical Society and Palaeobotanical Society and a regular member of International Phycological Society.
