Synopsis Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) represent an innovation in Indian Banking. The innovation is not only institutional but relates to objectives, functions, area of operation and its clientele. For this reason, RRBs be regarded as specialized institutions, i.e., distinct from commercial banks as well as co-operative credit agencies. This book divided into six chapters contain interalia the analysis of the purpose and logic of the already existing credit institutions, their strengths and weaknesses in achieving the goals for which they were setup, the changing environment which necessitates the setting-up of new institutions called Regional Rural Banks, an analysis of their operations at all India level and in the state of Orrisa. It provides an indepth analysis of the features they possess as rural credit institutions history of the various committees on RRBs, the liberalised policy measures exclusively for the RRBs in the wake of Financial Sector Reforms (FSRs) and the impact these measures have had on their growth and performance over the years. It is hoped that the book will be very useful to the teachers and researchers engaged in the study of rural banking especially in the post banking sector reform period.

About the authors

Ashok Kumar Mohanty

Dr. Ashok Kumar Mohanty is the Reader in the P.G. Department of Commerce, Berhampur University. He was the recipient of Gold Medal by security First Class First Position in M.Com. Examination, 1981 of the University. He is having twenty years of Post-Graduate and M.Phil. Teaching experience in Commerce, MFC, MBA and Future Studies. Dr. Mohanty did work on a U.G.C. sponsored research project on the Management f Technology Transfer for his doctoral degree. He has successfully guided for research scholars who were awarded with Ph.D. degree in the areas of rural banking, port infrastructure, investment banking and consumer protection, Presently scholars under his guidance working in the area of foreign trade and EXIM Bank, DFLs and LIC. He has written a book titled Technology Transfer in Indian Automobile Industry, “A Study on Operational Analysis of Regional Rural Banks in Rural Development”. Dr. Mohanty has published more than fifty research articles in various national and state journals of repute. He regularly participates in national and international seminars, conferences and workshops and he has already attended 40 such events by contributing articles so far. He was heading the P.G. Department of Commerce, Berhampur University during the period 2000-02 and was member of Senate, Academic Council, Regulation Committee, etc. of the University. He is the life member of academic bodies like Indian Accounting Association, Indian Academy of Social Sciences and Orissa Commerce Association. At present he is the Associate Editor of the Orissa Journal of Commerce the prestigious research journal of Orissa Commerce Association in the State.

Shyama Charan Acharya

Dr. Shyama Charan Acharya is the Senior Lecturer, in the Post-Graduate Department of Commerce, G.M. (Autonomous) College, Sabalpur, Orissa. He occupied the First Class First Position in M.Com. Examination (1984) of Sambalpur University, Orissa. He has been in the Orissa Education Service (College Branch) since 1990. He had been on U.G.C. Teacher Fellowship to the P.G. Deptt. of Commerce, Berhampur University, Orissa from April 2000 to March 2002. He has contributed research papers to various state and national level journals. He is a life Member of the All Orissa Commerce Association.
